Have you had any nicknames as a teacher?
I have had a few nicknames over the years, but I have 2 favourites. The funniest is Miss Frizzle, because, like the cartoon character, I have bright red hair, eccentric dress sense and an enthusiastic love of science. I even have a pet lizard!
The second is my favourite: Hinestein! I apparently talk about Einstein a lot and my last name is Hines.
What has been your best moment as a teacher?
I don’t have one specific moment, more a series of them. I love it when students have been working hard to understand an idea, then they finally have that ‘lightbulb’ moment. I also appreciate when the most unexpected students love your subject because it means they can see your enthusiasm and passion.
How have your students described you?
I have been described as firm, but fair. My classroom runs on mutual respect and a genuine love for both my job and scientific knowledge.
How do you help students achieve their goals?
I listen to their goal and why they wish to achieve it. It does not matter what that goal is, whether they simply wish to pass or achieve 100%, I will do my best to help. I ensure there is a mix of written work, colourful notes, auditory explanations and hands on activities.
Anything else to add?
I try to have an infectious passion for teaching science. I have a genuine care and respect for each and everyone of my students. I also try to build rapport and get to know my students, so they feel comfortable with asking for help.
